Kate and Andy Mackinnon’s garden

Livermore

Lot size: 2,500 sq. ft. front garden on tour, 75% native

Garden Age: Garden was installed between spring and fall of 2008

Years on the Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour: New this year!

Showcase Feature
Picture a time- and water-consuming lawn; now cover it with cardboard and six inches of woodchips (delivered free by an arborist). Then flash forward five months, to when the garden was planted with a colorful array of natives, including three kinds of buckwheat (St. Catherines’s lace, California, and rosy); the aromatic coyote mint; and several types of beautifully-scented sages (hummingbird, California, and Bee’s Bliss). Three types of native bunchgrasses wave gracefully in the breeze, surrounded by the vivacious red tubular flowers of the California native fuchsia, the cheerful purple-blues of the native penstemon, and the bright oranges of the poppy, our state flower. This low-maintenance, water-conserving garden was designed by Kat Weiss, of Kat Weiss Landscape Design.

IMG_5440Other Garden Attractions
• Pink flowering currant and toyon will soften the lines of the house when mature.
• Native grape climbs the porch.
• Gracefully-curving path made of Three Rivers Flagstone makes the garden accessible; boulders provide visual interest.

IMG_5445Gardening for Wildlife
Kate and Andy’s toddlers are probably the wildest things in this garden, but it is also frequented by butterflies and bees, happily nectaring and gathering pollen, and birds, who come to pass the day.

Native Plants for Sale: Native plants will be sold by Native Revival.
