Showcase Feature: This 40-year work-in-progress, designed and installed by Timothea and William, is filled with surprises, beginning with the inviting entry gate with its whimsical collection of old bells, continuing past the burbling bamboo fountain with the antique Korean stone bowl, and wandering down the steep swordfern-filled slope to the redwood grove at the bottom the lot, which was planted nearly a hundred years ago. In the back garden curves, subtle changes in elevation, and an open-weave fence create the illusion of more space.  Native plants consist mostly of shade-lovers, including redwood sorrel, coral bells, various kinds of ferns, hazelnuts, and leopard lilies.  Drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants are mixed among the natives, and they dominate the sunny and dry parts of the garden. Timothea’s artistic sensibilities are evident; this inviting garden includes a unique decorative brick patio, and features interesting uses of rock and pebbles of varying sizes and textures, including along the edges of paths, and at the bases of trees. Other Garden Attractions:

• Forty years ago, when Timothea and William bought the house, the garden consisted of blackberry and ivy, which they pulled out by hand (no herbicides were used).
• The reduced lawn is just large enough for children to tumble on.
• Timothea’s nature-based paintings (walnut ink on paper) will be on display and available for sale in the cottage at the bottom of the lot; checks and cash only.
